Social Studies: Students are required to read pages 590-602.  We will grade all outstanding work and complete page 604 tomorrow.  Page 604 will be due on  Wednesday.  The first Test is Friday, September 4.
Math: Today is a continuation of one-step equations with multiplication and division.  The assignment is page 58, problems 8-35.  The first Unit Test will be on Thursday, September 3.

Social Studies: We took a Map TEST over South Asia.  Most students seemed to do extremely  well.  We also watched a short video on the geography of India and worked a worksheet in groups.

Math: We worked the problems associated with yesterday’s content.  Students worked individually, with study buddies, or in a small group with the teacher.  This grouping was dependent upon the individual student’s needs.  We worked the problems in class, and very few were not complete at the end of class.  These individuals should complete the assignment for homework.

Assignment: Pg 48; Problems 6-11 and Pg. 54; Problems 8-22

Social Studies: We are beginning our study of South Asia.  Students will have a Map Test on Wednesday the 26th.  They will be required to know the location of 7 countries and 14 physical features of Southern Asia.  The students have been given an identical map to study.  However, the test will have the numbers scrambled.  Throughout our studies this year, we will be discussing several religions and learning about them.  This does not mean that I will be endorsing any religion over any other.  I will explain what/how/why religious groups believe what they believe, because the best way to understand a civilization is through their own eyes.

Math: Do you “speak algebra?” is our focus.  We are learning about the purpose of variable, combing like terms, simplifying expressions, and solving equations.  We are discovering that math is a language of numbers.  How something is said directly impacts the end result.  Students are developing mathematical habits that will aid them from this point forward in their study of mathematics.  There will be a Quiz over 1-6 through 1-11 on Thursday the 27th.  Below are the assignments that we have had thus far this week.

8-24-09: Pg 44; Problems 7-27 (25, # 7 has 5 parts)

8-25-09: NO HOMEWORK  We will do this assignment in class.  I want to be available to answer any questions that students might have at this pivotal point of their studies.

Social Studies: We have been working on a South Asia worksheet.  It is my hope that this will preview the material, so students will understand the content in a better way.

Math: We are plugging right along.  Today’s concept is essentially “speaking algebra.”  We are translating word phrases into math and math into word phrases.  The assignment is Pages. 40-41; Problems 7-19, 22-29 (21 total).

Social Studies: Students are being required to write a paragraph for each of the five themes of Geography.  These paragraphs are due tomorrow and should include what was placed on the collage and why for each of the five themes.  Also, each response should clearly portray an understanding of the content.  Rambling without purpose is no better than a blank response.

Math: Students will have an Order of operations Quiz and begin a study of mathematical Properties.  These properties are the Commutative, Associative, Identity, and Distributive Properties.  Students must learn these in order to provide a solid foundation for the algebraic concepts that are just around the bend.

Assignment: 1-6: Properties; Pgs. 30-31; Problems 19-36, 46-53 (26 problems total)

8-13-09: I’m back up and running!!!

I apologize for the past few days wtihout posts.  However, I was having some connection issues.  None-the-less, here is what has been done over the past few days.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We have been woking on a collage of the five themes of geography.  This project is focussed to Union County.  For example, the collage should NOT have high rise buildings in it, because there aren’t any in Union County.  This has been a group project and students will recieve a like grade with everyone in the group.  Also, students will recieve individual grades for the written component of the project.  This will assure that all students understand the content and not ride on the work of others.

MATH: We are working on the Order of Operations.  This concept is absolutely essential to the rest of the year’s content.  There has’t been any HW since Tuesday, beause I want to be certain that students do not get confused with this material.

Assignment: Pg. 25; Probs. 8-36 (29)

Vocabulary Test: Friday over sections 1-1 through 1-5.

8-11-09: Applying Expononts

Unfortunately, I forgot to Blog Yesterday.  I guess I have gotten out of the habit.  Oh well, every student received a 100% score for last nights homework.  I wanted everyone to get started on the right foot.

Today, we learned that Scientific Notation is simply moving the decimal a specified number of spaces.

Assignment:     Pgs. 20—21; Probs. 11—34, 45—52

Don’t forget about the Quiz tomorrow and the vocabulary test on Friday.
